'Congratulations!' 'You've been hired!';
‘See you on Monday!' It's exciting when you hear
these words on a Friday, after getting a job you worked hard to
get; and you're eager to get started. But by the time Monday
rolls around, many people have this feeling of excitement turn to
butterflies. However, the first day on a job is nothing to worry
about. Make sure you follow these steps to get off on the right
foot at your new workplace!
-
Planning is key to a good start at a new job. It's
a good idea to plan your route to work before your first day. Plan
alternate routes so if there is a lot of traffic, or public transit
arrangements are altered; you are prepared and not fazed by anything.
Avoiding commuting problems will allow you to stay relaxed and focused
on making good first impressions.
-
Dress conservatively and wear something you feel confident
in. If you feel confident inside, all of your co-workers will see
it and it will help your initial image.
-
Try to arrive at your workplace early on your first day.
This will give you the chance to properly greet everyone you encounter,
as you will have time to talk and not just rush straight to your
office. You will also have the chance to settle into your new quarters
before your boss drops by.
-
Enter with a smile and introduce yourself to everyone you
meet. Learn people's names and interests so you feel comfortable
with them and they feel comfortable with you. Don't be afraid
to ask questions, as most people are more than happy to help a new
employee out.
-
Bring doughnuts, go out to lunch, or get together with
your new co-workers. Not only will it be easier to break the ice,
but you will get the chance to learn what your peers are like off
the job as well. Take the initiative and people will see you as
friendly and approachable.
-
Finally, make sure other companies know that you are off
the market for work. There's nothing worse than getting a
phone call from someone trying to set up an interview with you on
your very first day somewhere else.
After that, just be yourself and do what you do best! Show you
are eager to work and continue to get to know your co-workers'
habits and interests at work and at home. The more comfortable you
are with your new peers will make the transition your new location
easier and more enjoyable; for you and your new workmates!
So next time you arrive for your first day at a workplace, follow
these steps and don't just wade into your new environment,
but make a big splash
