Helpful
tips for Successful New Employee Orientation
You’ve probably heard a story similar to one of these. A
new employee shows up on their first day of work and something isn’t
right. Maybe there’s no desk or computer ready for her. Possibly
their new boss is running late due to traffic and no one knows who
the new employee is or what she should be doing. Perhaps the new
employee ends up spending all day reading tedious employee manuals
because there’s no one there to train her. The list goes on.
Many HR managers agree that a successful orientation can be critical
to the employee’s long-term motivation with their new employer.
The good news is there are many simple and inexpensive ideas that
will help with a successful orientation. Here are a few of them:
- Call the employee a few days before their start date to remind
them of starting time, where they should go and what to expect
on their first few days, dress code, any questions, etc.
- Arrange for a tour of their new office on their first day,
including where the photocopier is, fax, washrooms, etc.
- Wrap up office supplies in a basket on their desk
- Add a welcome note to their computer
- Ensure the computer is in proper working condition and login
information is provided
- Arrange for a lunch on their first day with the team members
- Make sure associates are aware of the new employee and have
them to introduce themselves
- Provide a telephone listing of key contacts as well as give
instructions on how to use voice mail, passwords, etc.
- Give them information on after-hours office access
- Give them a copy of the organizational chart
- Make sure sufficient time is available for training the new
employee and being available to answer questions.
- Assign a mentor for times when you are not available.
- Give them a company t-shirt or some other promotional item
- Show them the company’s website and ask for suggestions
for improvement
- Make sure they are added to applicable email distribution lists
as soon as possible
- Email to associates the name of the new employee and a short
bio.
- Share with the employee the training to be given for the upcoming
hours/days/weeks.
As you can see, these easy ideas can go a long way to helping a
new employee feel part of the team as quickly as possible.
Special Offer: $500 Saving
on a One Year “Editable Posting”
Clients often ask us if we do anything for them when they have
ongoing needs for their company (as opposed to individual job postings).
To answer that need, we created our One Year “Editable Posting”.
Here’s how it works:
- You get one posting for the entire year which can be changed
at any point in time. So if this month you’re looking for
an Administrative Assistant and you fill that position but then
have a need for a sales person, with that editable posting you
can change the requirements to the new position at no additional
cost.
- You can update the posting yourself or we can do it for you.
- You can keep the same job up the whole year also if you want!
- You can change it as many times as you want for 12 months!
It’s a great idea for companies who hire throughout the
entire year for different positions.
For a limited time only, we are offering our One Year “Editable
Posting” for $500 each, a savings of $500 from our regular
prices.
If you would like to take advantage of this special offer, please
email sales@torontojobs.ca
or call 905-566-JOBS (5627) to make arrangements. This offer is
valid only until August 31, 2005.
Other custom packages can be assembled to meet your specific requirements
(for example, any combination of featured jobs, featured employer,
job postings, resume search, etc.). To discuss what type of package
would work best for you, please contact sales@torontojobs.ca
or call 905-566-JOBS (5627).
