An Organization's Number One Asset
An article by Dinah Bailey, HR ByDESIGN

The continued progress of an organization depends greatly on the effectiveness with which it develops its greatest asset – it’s employees.

One of the greatest challenges organizations face is retaining employees. The cost to replace one employee is 50% of that departing person’s salary.

Employees must feel valued and appreciated. They leave organizations for lack of career growth, low morale, management issues, poor training and little or no recognition of their accomplishments.

Retention strategies allow organizations to retain valuable employees and can be used as a means to transform an organization’s culture to a more desirable place to work.

Funniest Christmas Work Party Encounters

100 employers from www.TorontoJobs.ca were recently asked: “What is the funniest encounter that you have had at your Christmas Work Party”. The top 5 funniest responses included:

  • “When our dinner portion of the Christmas party was complete they proceeded to bring out a dessert buffet. The buffet was such a hit, one of our co-workers dipped his whole head into the chocolate fountain.”
  • “One of my co-workers was dancing out of control on the dance floor spilling her drink everywhere. She ended up falling on the drink that she had spilled and came into work the following week with a broken leg.”
  • “One of my co-workers had to give a speech at our annual Christmas party. He was so intoxicated that he got on the stage and started preaching about everything he didn’t like about each person in our office. Needless to say, the following week he had to pack up his desk.”
  • “The receptionist had planned our annual work Christmas party. She did everything by herself from planning the location to distributing the invitations. She wrote the wrong address on the invitations also leaving out the name of the event location and every person from our office showed up at a residential home. She no longer plans our events.”
  • “Two of our co-workers couldn’t control themselves at our annual work Christmas party and decided to engage in some hanky panky in the men’s washroom stall. It was the talk of our office for quite some time. Next year they should probably pick a better hiding spot.”

DETERMINING THE VALUE OF BENEFITS IN SEVERANCE PACKAGES.
AN ARTICLE BY EARL ALTMAN, EMPLOYMENT LAW

When an employee is terminated without cause, or sufficient notice, the amount that the employer must pay in lieu of notice is based on the total compensation to which the employee had been entitled. As employers have become more creative in their methods of compensation, particularly at the more senior levels, the determination of what must be included in a termination package becomes more complicated. Two recent decisions of the Ontario Superior Court have dealt with these issues. While it is clear that the value of benefits such as medical and dental insurance, and car lease payments must be included in the value of the termination package, there has been a significant amount of judicial debate over the extent to which bonuses, incentives, and stock options which would have arisen during the period of notice must be included in the termination package, and how these benefits are to be valued.
