Feeling Stuck in Your Career? Here are Five Signs to Watch Out For

Posted: 05.24.2022
Do you feel like your career has come to a halt?

Whether you’re feeling burnt out, stressed about your financial situation, or having a hard time coming up with new ideas – this feeling can happen to anyone at anytime. However, you want to be aware of whether this feeling is something that will pass versus being unhappy about the direction of your career. Sometimes taking some time off can do just the trick when you feel like you’re in a bit of a rut.

So in this article, we are going to discuss five things to look out for if you feel like you may be stuck in your current work situation.

1.  You’re overqualified.
Sometimes the reason why you are feeling such a halt in your career is that you are overqualified for the job. Perhaps you started working at your current job when you were a recent graduate, but now that you have been working in this position for some time, it may no longer be challenging enough. This can make you feel bored, which can lead you to feel stuck and unsure about your position. Perhaps you can try having a discussion with your manager or supervisor about growth options at your company and take on more responsibility.

2. You feel like you aren’t being heard.
Do you present a lot of ideas to your manager or supervisor, but you find that none of them are being implemented or at least tested? You may be dealing with employers who tend to get stuck in their ways and have a hard time trying something new. You may have heard the saying “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Sometimes companies just like doing things the way they’ve always done them and have no interest in veering off the path – which is okay, but it may limit your growth opportunities.

3. You don’t enjoy the people you work with.
This one can depend on the person. You don’t necessarily have to “like” all of your co-workers, especially if you can still work together to get tasks and projects done, but it can definitely help if you get along really well with those you work with. Maybe you are feeling a disconnect with other employees at your company and it’s making it harder for you to be more motivated and creative? If this is the case, it could be time to look for an organization that aligns with your personal values more, where company culture can be your top priority in mind.

4. You aren’t being compensated enough.
Being compensated less may not have been a problem when you first started your career, as getting experience outweighed the benefits of getting paid more. However, if you have been at your company for a long time or got more experience under your belt but there hasn’t been much change in your salary – it may be something to reflect on. You can use a salary calculator to determine the range of salary you should be getting for your position and level. It’s unfortunate, but sometimes employers take advantage of their employees by not paying them a salary that is more in line with the industry their in and their experience level.

5. You are in the wrong industry.
When you were choosing what career path you wanted after high school, sometimes people choose the wrong one. There’s a lot to think about when picking what you want to do with the rest of your life and a lot of the time, we really don’t know what we are getting ourselves into until we are actually experiencing it. If this is what’s happening to you, it may be a sign to re-evaluate the type of job you actually want. This may mean that you have to take an extra course or two to receive certain qualifications. You can also look at your current skill set and determine if there are complementary ones for another industry. For example, if you’re in journalism, there are a lot of transferrable skills in industries like public relations, communications, and marketing.
